Sgt Rachel Watson (RAF) has made the transition from player to match official to be become the first female UKAFRL Match Official.
Rachel had this to say “Stepping out onto the pitch for the fixture was daunting, Being the first female on a male only pitch was exciting but completely nerve racking at the same time. The UKAFRL Match Officials have been more than welcoming, they are so positive towards the future of officiating.
The fixture was hard work, I don’t think players or spectators understand how hard a touch judge or referee work, calls where questioned but I held my own and over time the players treated me just like the other ref’s, they even being called sir. I’d urge any woman wanting to give officiating a try, to go ahead and do it”.
